I do bike a bit. I own a Mercier TT kilo, its an entry level track frame that I used to use to get around the city, but now I live in rural PA so it acts as my “road bike”. Its light, sturdy, but definitely not the professional road bike grade your probably saving up for. I only occasionally hop on a mountain bike, and its never my own, always borrowed. 

For road bikes, if your on a budget, bikes direct is an awesome place to go. They have the mercier Corvus, which I have ridden and is a great bike: light enough, comfy, great geometry.

also, go ask LiveTheOutdoors about mountain bikes, I know he is probably more knowledgeable than I am!
